The authors consider a class of interface problems in two dimensions. Some piecewise linear and continuous finite element methods are proposed. Correction terms are added to the right-hand side of the natural method to render it second-order accurate. It is proved that the method is second-order accurate on general quasi-uniform meshes at the nodal points. In addition to this, it is shown that the natural method, although non-optimal near the interface, is optimal for points which have distance from the interface of order \(\mathcal O\sqrt{h\ln(1/h)}\).
