The book under review is a monograph about the theory of solitons. It is available only in Italian, so most discussions might be unaccessible to not Italian speakers/readers. The book is written for those who have a basic knowledge of matrix algebra and differential equations. The material discussed is strongly related to the thesis of the author, which has been defended in 1986. So, this book should be used more as a gentle introduction to the theory than as an up-to-date exposition of the cut-edge research on solitons. The author starts with the fundamental ideas and technical tools of the theory of solitons. The classical direct problem, inverse problem and Bäcklund transform are briefly explained. After this, the discussion focuses on the KdV equation and the Schrödinger equation and touches techniques of spectral theory, generalizing them to the case of matrix-valued fields. The book includes a preface by Antonio Degasperis.
