Philosophy of mathematics within the Warsaw school of mathematical logic (English)

The author discusses the relation between logical research and philosophical positions within the Warsaw school of mathematical logic. The author claims that Polish logicians and mathematicians did not develop an extensive philosophy of mathematics. Mainly based on general articles or introductory remarks by logicians from the Warsaw schools, the author says that leading Polish logicians such as Łukasiewicz, Alfred Tarski, and Andrzej Mostowski made a clear difference between ``private'' philosophical views and formal-technical research in mathematical logic. He does not dispute philosophical interests of those logicians and stresses the influence of philosophy on Łukasiewicz's many-valued logic and on Tarski's notion of truth. In the case of \textit{A. Mostowski} et al.'s article [Rozprawy Mat. 9, 48 p. (1955; Zbl 0067.24808)], the author opens the possibility that contemporary ideological atmosphere (Marxism) influenced his statements.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1321.01006].
