The main result of the paper gives necessary and sufficient conditions for embeddings of maximal tori in classical groups over a field \(K\) where \(K\) is a local field of characteristic \(\neq 2\) or the field of real numbers. The case of a global field \(K\) was already completed in [the first author et al., Pac. J. Math. 279, No. 1--2, 87--100 (2015; Zbl 1364.20037)]. Embeddings of maximal tori in classical groups can be described in terms of embeddings of étale algebras with involutions in central simple algebras with an involution satisfying a dimension condition established by [\textit{G. Prasad} and \textit{A. S. Rapinchuk}, Comment. Math. Helv. 85, No. 3, 583--645 (2010; Zbl 1223.11047)]. The results can be used to give a new proof of a result of Prasad and Rapinchuk [loc. cit.] concerning algebras with orthogonal involutions with the same invariant subalgebra.
