The paper discusses several generalizations of Einstein's theory of gravitation. The Lagrangian is a scalar depending on the metric and the full Riemann tensor. The core of the paper is theorem 1. It states that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the mentioned generalizations of Einstein's theory on the one hand to Einstein's theory with another metric and an additonal matter field on the other.NEWLINENEWLINEAs a possible application it is mentioned that the singularity theorems of Einstein's theory of gravitation get their analogous theorems in these generalized theories of gravitation.NEWLINENEWLINEThe present paper is similar in scope as: [\textit{A. Jakubiec} and the author, Gen. Relativ. Gravitation 19, 719--727 (1987; Zbl 0617.53064)].
