Several aspects of linear relations (i.e., multivalued linear operators) are studied in this paper. In particular, the notion of congruent relation is introduced and studied; roughly, a congruent relation is a relation with equal defect numbers. The authors also introduce the spectrum associated with this class, called congruent spectrum, and prove, in this context, a spectral mapping theorem.
