Let \(R\) be a commutative ring with a nonzero identity element. The authors characterize when a finitely generated \(R\)-modules \(M\) is a multiplication modules by means of Fitting ideals of \(M\), and then, study properties of finitely generated \(R\)-modules that are direct sums of multiplication modules.
