These authors introduce the invariant ``L-space'' of ribbon graphs, generalizing the intersection matrices of chord diagrams and reinterpreting the actions of Morse perestroikas and Vassiliev moves. They also define a bialgebra on its span ``which is analogous to the 4-bialgebra structure on chord diagrams.'' The paper is dedicated to the memory of Sergei Duzhin, whose kindness to this reviewer will not be forgotten.
