The Oxford solid state basics (English)
0 references
This book is a sequential introductory course of solid state physics covering a wide range of questions from oldest basics by Einstein-Debye-Drude-Sommerfeld up to the modern applications of the Hubbard model.NEWLINENEWLINEThe characteristic feature of the book's style is a close connection between the examples representing real physical situations (richly illustrated) and the approaches of the theoretical physics and mathematical methods suitable for their description, explanation and modeling.NEWLINENEWLINEThe author's passion to visualize everything especially simplifies the traditionally abstract topic of the crystal structure (Section IV: Geometry of solids) and its vector algebra representation.NEWLINENEWLINEAlso, this book can serve not only as a course of physics solely, but as a useful illustrative tool in various mathematical courses. In particular, Part III (Toy models of solid in one dimension) provides a very clear explanation of the spectral approach to the oscillatory and wave solutions for lattice systems of coupled oscillators, Chapters 13--14 (Reciprocal lattice, Brillouin zone, waves in crystals and neutron and X-ray diffraction) contain the self-consistent material connected with the multidimensional Fourier transform supplied with illustrative examples of its interpretation.NEWLINENEWLINEEach chapter is supplied with a short summary and exercises. As an additional reading, the annotated recommendations are provided.NEWLINENEWLINEFinally, the presence of the marginalia should be pointed out, which communicate interesting facts, historical notes and simply provide a literature pleasure to the reader.
