Soft matter is a class of materials which include polymers, colloids, surfactants, and liquid crystals. This book is an introduction to this important class of materials from the viewpoint of physics. The properties of soft matter are complex, but they can be understood in terms of physics. The aim of the book is to provide a base for such physical thinking for soft matter. The book consists of 10 chapters: What is soft matter; Soft matter solutions; Elastic soft matter; Surfaces and surfactants; Liquid crystals; Brownian motion and thermal fluctuations; Variational principle in soft matter dynamics; Diffusion and permeation in soft matter; Flow and deformation of soft matter; Ionic soft matter; and 6 Appendices: Continuum mechanics; Restricted free energy; Variational calculus; Reciprocal relation; Statistical mechanics for material response and fluctuations; Derivation of the Smoluchowskii equation from the Langevin equation.
