This paper investigates the issues arising when attempting to apply discontinuous Galerkin methods to problems on surfaces. The authors show that the additional geometric error terms arising when approximating the surface scale in such a way that they do not affect the convergence rates proved and observed for the standard finite element method, when using the linear ansatz functions.
