The author compares several topological notions, which are used in papers on globally hyperbolic spacetimes and the related Cauchy problem for the propagation of a scalar field \(\Phi\). These topological notions are of the structure: \(\Phi\) has compact support in spacelike directions, etc. Also advanced, retarded, future and past compact sets are distinguished. Several theorems state under which circumstances which of these notions lead to (in-)equivalent statements.
