Performance modeling, stochastic networks, and statistical multiplexing (English)
    0 references
The book presents a mathematical approach to the modeling and analyzing the performance of the communication networks. The stochastic networks (in particular the Markovian networks) are covered in the monograph. The authors also discuss the recent results on the network utility optimization. In the first chapter, the basic concepts are presented, as well as the basic probabilistic models for networks and traffic. The second chapter introduces the queueing models with basic methods of its analysis. In the third chapter, the loss models for networks are discussed. In the fourth chapter, the stochastic network models are presented, including the classical Jackson models and Whittle networks. In the last chapter, the statistical multiplexing is discussed. As the authors state in the abstract, ``the novelty of the monograph is the fresh approach and insights provided by a sample-path methodology for queueing models''. The book is a valuable contribution, interesting for the researchers in the area of the stochastic networks, as well as for the lecturers who would like to provide a course in the network performance covering the newest results in this field.
