The authors define the Bessel potential operator \( B^{s} \), \( 0 < s < n \), \( n \geq 1 \), and prove its continuity in optimal couples of rearrangement invariant spaces in \( {\mathbb R}^{n} \) equipped with the Lebesgue measure. The main results are illustrated by four examples.
