Remembered best by mathematicians for his \textsl{Scientific American} column and the books it engendered, Martin Gardner pursued a wide range of interests, such as sleight-of-hand, literature, and the debunking of pseudoscience. NEWLINENEWLINEThe book under review traces his life and expounds his philosophical and religious views. This book, completed very shortly before Gardner died, represents his definitive summary of a long, rich life and -- as always with Gardner -- is highly readable. Even those well familiar with Gardner's writings, although they will be acquainted with much of the ground covered, will still make several new discoveries. The foreword by Persi Diaconis will also interest mathematicians.
