This paper introduces the first Czech modern algebraist Vladimír Kořínek (1899--1981), whose critical biography was published in [\textit{Z. Kohoutová} and \textit{J. Bečvář}, Vladimír Kořínek, 1899--1981 (Czech). Prague: Research Center for the History of Sciences and Humanities (2005; Zbl 1250.01004)]. He worked in group and lattice theory as well as in mathematical statistics, but is primarily remembered for his educational and organisational activities after the Second World War. The author emphasises Kořínek's courageous stance during the war and in the 1950's, when Czechoslovak universities were subject to heavy-handed management by administrative personnel.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1330.01007].
