The author shortly describes life and some scientific achievements of Marek Kuczma (1935--1991), a professor of the Silesian University in Katowice. The list of Kuczma's 13 PhD students is given. In 1980, at the age of 45, Kuczma suffered a second brain stroke and became seriously paralysed. Nevertheless, he continued his scientific activity. Kuczma worked mainly on functional equations. He was an author of 179 papers published in the years 1958--1993 and three books. He is regarded as the creator of the theory of iterative functional equations. NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINE NEWLINEIn the reviewed paper, selected results by Kuczma, itemized in seven subchapters, are presented. They are connected, in particular, with the functional equation \(\varphi(f(x))=g(x)\varphi(x)\), the Schröder equation, convex functions and Jensen connectivity, Cauchy equation, and also a characterization of some plane curves (which generalizes the result published in [\textit{B. Grünbaum} and \textit{J. Mycielski}, Am. Math. Mon. 97, No. 9, 839--846 (1990; Zbl 0799.51007)]).NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1279.39001].
