For the honor of the human spirit. A new view on a well-known controversy between Fourier and Jacobi on the role of applications of mathematics (English)
0 references
The paper is devoted to the controversy between Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier (1768--1830) and Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi (1804--1851) concerning the role of applications of mathematics. Jacobi wrote in a letter to Legendre that -- according to him and contrary to the opinion of Fourier -- the aim of mathematics is the honor of the human spirit. In the paper, opinions and views of various mathematicians of that time (among them Niels Henrik Abel, Siméon Denis Poisson, Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel, Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet) are considered and discussed.
