The author studies the parallelogram law and its proofs in the work of d'Alembert and Kant and she points out differences and common elements. She takes Newton's Principia as a starting point. After the Principia in dynamics forces and movement were linked intrinsically. It is interesting to see how the parallelogram laws for the composition of instantaneous velocities and the composition of forces relate in this period.
