In an appendix, the author lists 21 Greek books published from 1568 to 1820 that relate to commercial arithmetic. The paper shows how those books in the 17th century contributed to the promotion of new commercial systems being developed in the West that came mainly from Venice, where most of the books were printed. Many were intended to take advantage of, and give educational support to, an increasing Greek independence, culminating in the Greek revolution of 1821. A bibliography of further modern references is included.
