Magic squares are a well-known topic in recreational mathematics. They are defined by being `balanced' in terms of the totals for rows, columns or diagonals being equal. This paper considers Franklin magic squares, which are magic squares that have additional balance requirements in terms of half-rows, half-columns, ``bent-rows'' and \(2\times 2\) subsquares. The author constructs a Franklin magic square of order 16, and discovers it is balanced it terms of many other configurations (although this reviewer was unable to discern some of the configurations in the figure provided).
