The paper provides rich insights into the origins of \(n\)-dimensional geometry. The first topic concerns the prehistory. Then the author considers geometrical algebra in its role in the Middle Ages.NEWLINEThe next topics include functions of many variables and notes on R. Descartes, G. W. Leibniz, L. Carnot, G. Bellavitis (with a remark about the ideas which gave birth to the notion of a vector) and C. G. J. Jacobi. The author also discusses the works of H. G. Grassmann and of L. Schläfli. He highly appreciates the results of J. Plücker.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 0989.00025].
