The paper deals with the numerical solution of 1D nonlinear conervation laws by the weighted essentially nonoscillatory schemes. The author focuses on a posteriori error analysis which is based on the so-called numerical smoothness. The derived local estimates are optimal with respect to the space as well as to the time. The theoretical results are justified by numerical experiments.
