The authors state a new way to construct a Darboux transformation for the Gerdjikov-Ivanov system. They also investigate the reduction of the Darboux transformation for the Gerdjikov-Ivanov system to the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation. Moreover, under some conditions, they give the breather solutions and rogue wave of the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation based on the Darboux transformation from a periodic ``seed'' with a constant amplitude.
