Real elements and Schur indices of a group. (Q2869553)

This paper is the summary of a talk given by the second author at a conference. It gives an introduction to known results, questions and open problems regarding real characters, real conjugacy classes and Schur indices of finite groups. According to the authors, the main objective of the paper is to present some examples which support some of the conjectures mentioned. These examples (symmetric and linear groups) are discussed in Section 5 of the paper and are in part based on computations with GAP.
