For a special dilation matrix, the author constructs a compactly supported bivariate scaling function and a corresponding nonseparable wavelet with compact support. This construction extends results of \textit{E. Belogay} and \textit{Y. Wang} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 30, No. 3, 678--697 (1999; Zbl 0946.42025)].
