This very nice book collects fifty essays about mathematics and its applications; some contributions have been written for this book and some appeared earlier in editions like Mathematics Today, Plus Magazine, The New Statesman, etc. Each of the articles takes the reader on an inspirational journey into the mathematics world; contributions are skillfully written and beautifully illustrated. The essays cover a wide range of exciting topics including the legendary Queen Dido's optimization problem, the story of code-cracking of German messages by English mathematicians during the second World War, mathematics of scoring points and sports gambling, introduction to catastrophe theory and traffic flow problems, to mention a few. Many contributors to this volume are well-known writers of popular expositions and authors of prize-winning texts. Warmly recommended as recreational and stimulating reading to all mathematics aficionado!
