In 1963 \textit{F. J. M. Barning} [Math. Centrum, Amsterdam, Afd. Zuivere Wisk. ZW 1963--011, 37 p. (1963; Zbl 0119.04401)] gave a systematic procedure to generate all primitive Pythagorean triples by using three distinct \(3\times 3\) unimodular matrices. In the paper under review the matrices of Barning are obtained using some modified Farey trees.
