This book has been translated from a Russian edition that appeared in 2012, a few months before the discovery of the Higgs boson at LHC. Many previous editions had been published before since 1981 in different languages, either in Russian, English or Italian. Their author Lev Okun is a distinguished expert on particle physics. Like in the present edition he always integrates or cites research and review articles, monographs and conference proceedings. In short sections he provides a bird's eye view on weak interactions, numerous decay modes and scattering cross sections. Field theoretical techniques are omitted. Important to Okun is the historical perspective on the developments in particle physics. He introduces the reader to the Higgs boson, grand unification, the standard model, spontaneous symmetry breaking, proton decay and recent discoveries in phenomenology. The book contains a rich collection of important research topics and many references to significant articles. It is intended for a wide audience of graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in particle physics.
