According to the theory of reception of new scientific ideas, the author distinguishes the following three associated processes: diffusion, studies, research. He illustrates them considering the history of non-simple formation of the topological line in Spanish mathematics in the mentioned period. Special attention is paid to the activities of Julio Rey Pastor (1888--1962). The opening part of the paper is dedicated to the memory of L. E. J. Brower (1881--1966) on the occasion of the centenary of his first publication in topology.
