Irmgard Gawehn (1900--1977) was a German topologist, who gave a topological characterization of the 2-sphere in her PhD thesis. From 1928--1930, she was L. E. J. Brouwer's assistant in Amsterdam. In 1938, she moved to a mental institution where she died in 1977. Hans Freudenthal has repeatedly accused Gawehn of not having written her PhD thesis herself. The authors argue that there is no evidence whatsoever that supports Freudenthal's claim. On the contrary, they argue that it is much more probable that Gawehn was a brilliant woman who started to suffer from schizophrenia soon after having written her thesis.
