The author considers the nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation NEWLINE\[NEWLINE u_t+\varphi(u)_x-g(u)_{xx}=0 NEWLINE\]NEWLINE in the strip \((0,T)\times{\mathbb R},\) where \(\varphi,\;g\in C({\mathbb R}),\) and \(g(u)\) is nonstrictly increasing. By virtue of the method of compensated compactness it is proved that weak limits of approximate entropy solutions are entropy solutions as well.
