The paper considers a finite element interpolation error estimate for a finite element space whose functions are piecewise affine in each element. The element may be useful for solving elliptic problems whose coefficients are discontinuous across some smooth interface using unfitted finite element meshes. The obtained error estimate is of the order \(O(h^{3/2})\) in \(L^2\), provided that the approximated function is smooth outside the interface.
