The book under review is a first of three parts of a handbook devoted to the history of computer science. It is based on courses given by the author at universities in Zielona Góra (Poland) and Syktyvkar (Russia). The book consists of three chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the history of calculating machines and to the architecture of computers. Chapter 2 tells about the development of the theory of algorithms (Post, von Neumann, Markov, Kleene, Hilbert's tenth problem, the P=NP-problem). Chapter 3 is devoted to the history of systems of artificial intelligence. The author avoids technical details putting stress on main ideas and methods.NEWLINENEWLINEThe book is supplemented by bibliography as well as by index of names and subject index. Some of the chapters contain exercises that should help the reader to check whether he/she understand the material.
