What does the arrest and release of Emile Borel and his colleagues in 1941 tell us about the German occupation of France? (English)

The article gives many new insights on the short arrest of Emile Borel (and three other members of the French Academy of Science) by the German authorities during their occupation of Paris in October and November 1941. The authors give, based on documents from German and French archives (and other sources), a general context, explaining the main interests of the German occupation forces at the mentioned time, and thus, at least to some extent, explain the short durance of the arrest of the four French intellectuals. Consequently, this paper is of interest for an audience which not only includes historians of mathematics, but all interested in the history of German occupation of France.
