A polynomial \(P\in \mathbb{C}[x,y]\) is a coordinate if there is \(Q\in \mathbb{C}[x,y]\) such that \((P,Q)\) is a polynomial automorphism of \(\mathbb{C }^{2}.\) The main result is that if \(P\) is a polynomial function \(P:\mathbb{C} ^{2}\rightarrow \mathbb{C}\) with irreducible fibres of the same genus (no asumptions on smoothness of the fibres) then \(P\) is a coordinate. It implies that there do not exist counterexamples \(F=(P,Q)\) to the Jacobian conjecture such that all fibres of \(P\) are irreducible curves with the same genus.
