What is\dots an affine sphere? (English)
0 references
This is a short introductory paper on affine hypersurface theory and, in particular, affine spheres. After basic standards the author sketches well known classes of affine hypersurfaces like quadrics, affine spheres and affine extremal hypersurfaces (the latter are ``maximal'' in case of strong local convexity). The final section is devoted to the connection between affine spheres and certain types of Monge-Ampère equations; moreover, the authors refers to relations between affine spheres, polynomial algorithms in convex programming, and mathematical imaging.
