This is the second edition of a book first published in the mid seventies by Macmillan Press; see the review of the repr. ed. [London: Imperial College Press (1997; Zbl 0929.74001)]. This new edition keeps up with the successful strategy of the former and, in addition to the presented codes rewritten in updated contemporary FORTRAN versions, introduces updated novelties such as nonlinear material behaviour. The edition is subdivided into eight chapters, starting with structural analysis and continuum mechanics. To emphasize finite elements for harmonic and biharmonic problems, the author uses basically simple constant strain triangular elements. The last chapter discusses further applications with an updated view of finite elements. Selections of problems, with solutions, are also included at the end of various chapters. Electronic versions of all computer codes are availed for the download from the publisher's website. This well-organized revised edition is intended to be an introduction to finite elements for engineering students and practising professionals.
