This book was published until 1996 under the title ``Physics -- understanding through exercises'' (Physik -- Verstehen durch Übung). The 11th edition of this book includes the detailed solution of 489 problems, with various levels of difficulties, in six areas of undergraduate physics: mechanics, oscillations and waves, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, optics, and structure of materials. In the chapter on thermodynamics, seven new exercises dealing with heat radiation are presented.NEWLINENEWLINE The authors encourage students to find their own mathematical formulation of the problem, its structure, a solution strategy and a numerical solution method. The detailed solution steps presented in the book should only be used by students to control their understanding of the fundamental concepts and the basic laws of physics and to strengthen their problem solving skills.NEWLINENEWLINE This book will not only be a study help for students in the first semesters of higher educational institutions, it will also be welcomed by teachers of undergraduate physics, who are looking for meaningful practical examples to illustrate the theory.
