This is an obituary of the outstanding Russian mathematician A. G. Kostyuchenko (1931 -- 2010) who introduced (together with I. M. Gelfand) the notions of generalized eigenvectors and eigenvalues of a selfadjoint operator, worked in spectral theory of differential operators, theory of nonselfadjoint operators and operator pencils.
