By means of Krasnoselskii's fixed point theorem, the authors obtain boundedness results and a stability theorem with a necessary and sufficient condition of a neutral nonlinear differential equation with variable delays. The obtained results extend and improve the work of \textit{C. H. Jin} and \textit{J. W. Luo} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 68, No. 11, A, 3307--3315 (2008; Zbl 1165.34042)], and also those of \textit{T. A. Burton} [Fixed Point Theory 4, No. 1, 15--32 (2003; Zbl 1061.47065)]; \textit{T. A. Burton} and \textit{T. Furumochi}, Dyn. Syst. Appl. 11, No. 4, 499--519 (2002; Zbl 1044.34033)] and \textit{B. Zhang} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl. 63, No. 5-7, A, e233-e242 (2005; Zbl 1159.34348)].
