The authors consider the finite element method to approximate second order elliptic problems on a nonconvex polygonal domain. A class of a posteriori estimators is studied for the error in the maximum norm of the gradient on single elements. The present work is an extension of previous articles on smooth domains [cf. \textit{W. Hoffmann} et al., Math. Comput. 70, No. 235, 897--909 (2001; Zbl 0969.65099) and \textit{A. H. Schatz} and \textit{L. B. Wahlbin}, ibid. 73, No. 246, 517--523 (2004; Zbl 1038.65115)].
