The road to Maxwell's demon. Conceptual foundations of statistical mechanics. (English)
0 references
This book on the foundations of physics proposes a new conceptual framework to make statistical mechanics more consistent with irreversible processes with respect to some pitfalls. In this way, it can be considered as revisiting some key concepts of the philosophy of physical science. One examines successively, with new points of view, the notion of macrostates, probability, measurement, memory and the arrow of time, to arrive at the conclusion that the Maxwell's demon is not so irrelevant that it looks like. The book focuses mainly on those problems related to Maxwell demon and for instance does not deal with the paradoxes of quantum mechanics.
