This book is the second of a series: the first one, from the same authors, was intitled `La nascita dell'algebra e la riflessione dei matematici arabi' [Rome: Aracne (2010; Zbl 1211.01003)]. This book concerns the beginning of the european medieval algebra with the latin translations of the islamic texts (\S1), Fibonacci's books (\S2), abacus' schools between the low Middle Ages and Renaissance (\S3), the italian algebraists in the 16th century (\S4), Rafael Bombelli (\S5) and the last texts before the emergence of symbolic algebra at the beginning of the 17th century (\S6). The main content of the book is a detailed analysis of the algebraic problems, translated in the modern form.
