On the Hamilton-Jacobi variational formulation of the Vlasov equation (English)

The Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of Vlasov-like systems has been developed by this author and D. Pfirsch in a series of papers since the mid 1980s. Here a very short overview of this method is given. The formulation is general, and applies to Maxwell-Vlasov systems, guiding centers and gyrokinetic approaches to a plasma with any number of species. It is prepared so as to be applicable not only to classical but also to the relativistic versions of the theories (Vlasov-Einstein system). This paper, however, concentrates on the simplest context of Vlasov-Poisson systems, recalling the obtained results for the audience of this conference.NEWLINENEWLINEFor the entire collection see [Zbl 1238.00013].
