The paper has four different parts. In the first part groups are exhibited that cannot act on any compact manifold. The second and third part deal with actions of lattices and hyperbolic groups, and the fourth one discusses conjugacy of translation actions. The style of the paper varies considerably, between giving results and proofs, problems, conjectures, perspectives, hopes, failures, speculations and possible lines of attack.
