The author considers the notion of abelian structure in an additive category with cancellation axiom, which extends the usual notion of proper class of short exact sequence in an abelian category. This is the context used to study cohomology of small categories, relative extension groups in some functor category, spectral sequences of Ext, and relative global dimension of the category of diagrams.
