The article presents spotlights on mathematics at the University of Leipzig, founded in 1409. The author recalls the following highlights: the habilitation of G. W. Leibniz (1646--1716) in 1666 and his fundamental papers on calculus in Acta Eruditorum, a journal of Leipzig scientists; C. F. Hindenburg (1741--1808) as a ``father of a combinatorial school'' which developed Leibniz's ideas; O. Hölder (1859--1937) and his son E. Hölder (1901--1990), both acting as directors of the Institute of Mathematics, so that one may speak of the ``Hölder era'' in Leipzig; the era includes ``golden years'' (the two last decades of the 19th century) with the names of C. Neumann (1832--1925), F. Klein (1849--1925), Sophus Lie (1842--1899) and some others; E. Hopf (1902--1983), one of the founders of modern ergodic theory, together with some of his colleagues working in the area. There are more names, but in general the article is concise and the author refers for further details to a joint work with \textit{K.-H. Schlote} [``Mathematik'', in: U. von Hehl (ed.) et al., Geschichte der Universität Leipzig 1409--2009, Band 4. Fakultäten, Institute, Zentrale Einrichtungen.
