The paper deals with variants of the concentration compactness principle. The results can be applied to verify local Palais-Smale conditions for energy functionals arising from certain elliptic systems in bounded domains subject to homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions involving critical Sobolev exponents. The proofs of the concentration compactness results use ideas of \textit{P. L. Lions} [Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 1, No. 1, 145--201 (1985; Zbl 0704.49005); ibid. No. 2, 45--121 (1985; Zbl 0704.49006)].
