The concept of fuzzy metric space of \textit{I. Kramosil} and \textit{J. Michalek} [Kybernetika, Praha 11, 336--344 (1975; Zbl 0319.54002)] was improved by \textit{A. George} and \textit{P. Veeramani} [Fuzzy Sets Syst. 64, No. 3, 395--399 (1994; Zbl 0843.54014)]. The common E.\,A.\ property is due \textit{M. Aamri} and \textit{D. El Moutawakil} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 270, No. 1, 181--188 (2002; Zbl 1008.54030)]. The authors use the above concepts to prove common fixed point theorems for weakly compatible maps, thus extending, among others, a result due to \textit{D. Miheţ} [Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl., Ser.~A, Theory Methods 73, No.~7, 2184--2188 (2010; Zbl 1195.54082)].
